Sequestration has dominated the headlines, but meanwhile, I’m pleased that immigration reform has continued to creep forward this past week. In this Monday’s Top Picks, I’d especially like to lift up Janet Murguia’s reflections on the emerging coalition between labor and business, and Joe Gietl’s piece on the need for an efficient road to citizenship.
- In her piece “How Budget Cuts from Sequestration Will Affect the Nation’s Immigration System,” Amanda Peterson Beadle of Immigration Impact discusses the negative and positive outcomes of sequestration, including the release of some detainees and an increased backlog in immigration courts.
- Joe Gietl of the National Immigrant Justice Center writes of the need for a path to citizenship, and one family’s 20-year wait, in his piece, “Rethink Immigration: healthy Families Need More Than Work Permits.”
- “We Must Seize Opportunities to Make Immigration Reform a Reality,” says Janet Murguia, President of the National Council of La Raza, in her piece on the emerging alliance between two traditional foes, labor and business.
- Writing on the Fair Immigration Reform Movement blog in her press release, “Immigrant Families Launch Bus Tour to Tell Stories of Broken System,” Donna De La Cruz spotlights the new Keeping Families Together Story Tour, where more than 500 people will travel over 20,000 miles to advocate for immigration reform.
- In her post for America’s Voice, “Dysfunction of Immigration System of Full Display This Week, Heightens Need for Real Reform,” Van Le criticizes ongoing unnecessary detentions, but finds hope in continued collaboration between the White House and the Senate on reform.
